What to Expect from this Course

This three-hour online course includes the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services Power to Arrest training curriculum. The course satisfies the first part (Part A) of the training requirement to apply for the California Security Guard License/Registration ("Guard Card").

COURSE OVERVIEW

  1. Introduction to Training Requirements. 
  2. Responsibilities and ethics in citizen arrest.
  3. Relationship between a security guard and a peace officer in making an arrest.
  4. Limitations on security guard power to arrest.
  5. Restrictions on searches and seizures.
  6. Criminal and civil liabilities, including both of the following:
    1. Personal liability.
    2. Employer liability.
  7. Trespass law.
  8. Ethics and communications.
  9. Emergency response, including response to medical emergencies.
  10. Security officer safety.

The course is intended to be a learning experience and a guide to understanding. 

After completing any section, you can take a break from the training course and restart the training where you left off.

Completion of the training course does not guarantee nor imply licensure.

The second part (Part B) of the training requirement (Appropriate Use of Force) must be completed in person at our Oakland training facility (524 7th Street, Oakland, CA). We offer this training one day per month from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (typically on a Wednesday or Friday).

The in-person training (Part B) is approximately five hours long and includes the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services Appropriate Use of Force training curriculum. The course is taught in English only. After the in-person Appropriate Use of Force training is completed, a final exam will be administered. A final score of 100 percent is required before the student can progress in the licensing process. The final exam is an open-book examination. It contains 52 multiple-choice and true-or-false questions in English.

After completing the in-person course (Part B) at our training facility in Oakland, a training completion certificate will be issued.

The BSIS Guard Card application fee and the Live Scan fingerprinting background processing fee are additional, at $129.00.
